Civil War-dated ALS signed “W. T. Sherman, Mag. Gen. Comdg,” one page, 3.25 x 4.25, August 16, 1863. Addressed from “Hd. Qrs. 15th Army Corps, Camp on Black River,” a handwritten letter from Sherman, in full: “Refund to Lt. Col. J. Condit Smith who will report if he knows where these tools are and who has them in possession.” The location and date were penned in another hand. Matted and framed with a color period engraving to an overall size of 8.75 x 16. The reverse of the frame bears the printed certificate of authenticity and wax seal of noted dealer Charles Hamilton. In fine condition. Accompanied by a modern print photo of “Sherman and His Officers – Memphis, 1862,” which shows Smith, chief quartermaster, looming large behind Sherman at center.
