Union general (1805-1871) in command of Fort Sumter who refused a formal demand for his surrender, leading to the bombardment of the fort and the start of the Civil War. Uncommon 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of Anderson in uniform, posing with one of his children, signed on the reverse in ink, "Sincerely your friend, Robert Anderson, July 11/62." Reverse bears the imprint of "Faris Photographic Gallery" in New York City. In fine condition.
Anderson's actions in defense of Fort Sumter made him an immediate national hero. He was promoted to brigadier general in the Regular Army, effective May 15, 1861. Anderson took the fort's 33-star flag with him to New York City, where he participated in a Union Square patriotic rally that was the largest public gathering in North America until then.
