American engineer and co-founder of Intel Corporation (1929–2023) who proposed Moore's law, which makes the observation that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles about every two years. Signed book: Statistical Mechanics by Joseph Edward Mayer and Maria Goeppert Mayer. Fifth printing. NY: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1950. Hardcover, 6.25 x 9.25, 495 pages. Signed on the first free end page in fountain pen with his ownership signature, "G. E. Moore, 2/19/52." Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG-/None, with sunning to the spine and upper section of the front board, and a couple small spots of paint or whiteout to the boards.
In September 1950, Moore enrolled at the California Institute of Technology ('Caltech'), where he would receive a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1954. He presumably acquired this book in the course of those studies, given its subject matter and 1952 date. In the preface, the authors describe their purpose: 'The rapid increase, in the past few decades, of knowledge concerning the structure of molecules has made the science of statistical mechanics a practical tool for interpreting and correlating experimental data. It is therefore desirable to present this subject in a simple manner in order to make it easily available to scientists whose familiarity with theoretical physics is limited. This book, which grew out of lectures and seminars given to graduate students in chemistry and physics, aims to fulfill this purpose.'
