Description

Partly-printed DS, signed twice, “C. A. Arthur,” one page, 8.25 x 13.75, March 11, 1875. An official "Oath of Office" by which Sherman P. Fitch, appointed as "clerk in the office of the Collector of Customs in and for the Port and District of New York," affirms his loyalty to the United States. In part: "I, Sherman P. Fitch, do solemnly swear that I have never voluntarily borne arms against the United States since I have been a citizen thereof; that I have voluntarily given no aid, countenance, counsel, or encouragement to persons engaged in armed hostility thereto…And I do further swear that, to the best of my knowledge and ability, I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." Signed twice by Chester A. Arthur as Collector of the Port of New York. Mounted, matted, and framed with a color portrait to an overall size of 24.75 x 16.75. In fine condition.
