Description

American statesman (1782–1866) who served variously as governor of Michigan, senator, ambassador to France, secretary of war, and secretary of state. Partly-printed DS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, August 31, 1833. Cass certifies a "Revolutionary Claim," in part: "I certify that, in conformity with the law of the United States of the 7th June, 1832, Nathan Knowlton of the State of Vermont, who was a Private, Musician and Corporal in the Revolutionary War, is entitled to receive Forty two dollars and Thirty three cents per annum, during his natural life." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by Secretary of War Lewis Cass and countersigned by Acting Commissioner of Pensions George William Crump. In fine condition. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Cass, featuring his facsimile signature.
