American historian, Secretary of the Navy, and diplomat (1813–1871) who established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Partly-printed DS, signed “G. Bancroft,” one page, 15.75 x 9.5, September 3, 1838. As Collector of Customs of the Port of Boston, Bancroft appoints William Winn as "a Temporary Inspector for the District of Boston and Charlestown." Signed at the conclusion in ink by George Bancroft, and endorsed on the reverse by William Winn. The paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. In very good to fine condition, with tape repairs to fold separations.
