American politician (1817–1895) who served as provisional governor of Alabama from June to December 1865, following the American Civil War. ALS signed “Lewis E. Parsons, Prov'l Gov. Ala.,” one page, 7.5 x 9.75, Executive Department of Alabama letterhead, August 26, 1865. Handwritten letter to President Andrew Johnson, in part: "I take great pleasure in enclosing the recommendation of Mr. Wheelan for the office of District Attorney for the Southern District of Ala. I cordially adopt the terms in which he is recommended by James Q. Smith Esquire." In fine condition, with light creasing in the margins.
