TLS signed “Ray,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, January 6, 1947. Letter to “Eddie,” his agent Edgar Carter, who works in the office of H. N. Swanson, in full: “Enclosed are copy of letter to Sanders about the Avon collection not yet published and copy of letter to the Avon Book Company. This projected collection, in case you don't know, consisted of four stories and an article from The Atlantic Monthly which was put in purely to make weight. Of the stories, one (I had forgotten this until recently) was a fantastic story called The Bronze Door, which I now don't want published at all. The story called Pick-Up on Noon Street is wanted for the World Publishing Company collection and the other two stories in the projected collection might well be forgotten. I leave the rest of the struggle to you. If the Avon people come back and say that they have already set the book up in print and used up paper on it, you will have to decide what is the fair and proper thing to do. Obviously they have had every opportunity to protect their rights and have not done so.” In fine condition.
Chandler’s short story The Bronze Door was first published in the November 1939 issue of John W. Campbell's fantasy magazine Unknown at the same time Chandler’s classic Phillip Marlowe novel The Big Sleep was released to the masses. The story was a departure from the norm for Chandler, a mix of crime fiction, noir, and dark fantasy set on the foggy streets of London, England. Although it’s said that Chandler dabbled in fantasy from time to time, he rarely submitted these stories for publication.
