TLS signed “Ray,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, January 29, 1947. Letter to “Eddie,” his agent Edgar Carter, who works in the office of H. N. Swanson, in full: “Thanks for copies of letters, etc. Hamish Hamilton knew I was working on a book and wanted to announce it for 1947 publication, although I warned him I could not be sure when it would be finished, so I gave it a provisional title. Then apparently some English editor saw the announcement and got in touch with Innes Rose about serial rights. I have already advised Rose about this, so you need not bother to write him again.
Joe Sistrom called me up a few days ago and wanted to come down for the weekend and discuss the story. I was in bed with the flu and still am very shaky. But, apart from this, I don't want to discuss the story with him any further until (a) I have signed a contract and (b) I have some feeling of certainty in my own mind about how the story is to go. At this stage, his ideas are not of the slightest use to me: in fact, they are a handicap, a sort of strait jacket. Also, since they have no contract actors of any importance, there is no use discussing cast or trying to slant the script for any definite actors.
I have a very strong feeling that, if I am not let alone to write the first draft of this screenplay more or less as it comes off the fire, I probably won't be able to write it. It is all right to have a producer looking over your shoulder when you are working on a definite piece of property, or when you are re-writing something that has taken form on paper. It is not all right when the producer's ideas start fighting with the writer's ideas before the writer has even formulated his ideas. Enclosed are two contracts which Sanders sent me to sign and which I do not want to sign until you have approved them.” In fine condition.
