TLS as president, one page, 6.5 x 10, White House letterhead, October 19, 1979. Letter to Dale W. Luehring, General Manager of the Golden Gate Bridge and Transit District, in full: “An important component of my Energy Program is to encourage conservation by improving the efficiency and flexibility of our transportation systems. I place a high priority on expanding our efforts in this area not only through the development of improved mass transit but also through a range of lower cost, immediate actions such as expanded carpooling and vanpooling. The potential savings from these ridesharing actions approaches 400,000 barrels per day by 1990 if we make a major national effort, involving both the government and the private sector. That is why I have asked Secretary of Transportation Neil Goldschmidt to create a National Task Force on Ridesharing.
Because of your position of leadership and interest in energy conservation, I am asking you to serve on this important Task Force. I expect the group to actively encourage other business and government leaders across the country to initiate and expand ridesharing programs and to assist in overcoming insurance, financial and regulatory barriers. I hope that participation on the Task Force will also reflect your personal commitment to encourage and facilitate expanded use of ridesharing by your own work force. I hope you will be able to accept this invitation to join in this national effort, expanding on the important work you are already doing within your own organization.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 9.5 x 13.5. In fine condition.
