Description

“The best painting of me was in the desert after the Battle of Alamein”

ALS, one page, 8 x 13, April 21, 1965. Handwritten letter to author and statesman Alan Herbert, in part: "I have told George Rainbird that I do not think the painting of him by the Dutch artist is good, and I do not want one of my like it to be in our book. I have further said that the books is about WAR, that I am a soldier, and the picture on the dust cover and frontispiece should show me in uniform. The best painting of me was in the desert after the Battle of Alamein; all artists agree it is the best picture in my home; it has never been photographed or published…. This is the one I would like in the book…. Rainbird is very disappointed. He says my 'reputation as a soldier is obviously taken for granted, as it should be, but not necessarily as an authority on war, which seems to me to need rather different treatment.' What are your views?" In fine condition.
