American admiral (1778-1869) who commanded vessels in the First Barbary War and the War of 1812. LS signed “Ch. Stewart,” one page, 8 x 10, June 30, 1849. Letter to Commander W. M. Glendy of the U.S. Sloop of War Ontario, in full: "On Thursday morning next the 3d proximo, I shall send from 70 to 80 recruits to Baltimore, on their way to Norfolk; Will you be pleased to have boats in readiness at the usual place, to take them on board of the 'Ontario' where I will thank you to provide dinner for them, their grog they will carry along with them." In fine condition, with some staining along the edges.
