The book tells the story of America's only US Navy fighter aces in the Vietnam War. 'Duke' and his Radar Intercept Officer or RIO, William 'Irish' Driscoll, flew a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom over North Vietnam from January to May of 1972. Cunningham would later become an instructor at the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School that Tom Cruise made famous in the movie Top Gun.
