Description

“With the slow smokeless burning of decay”—beautiful handwritten passage by Robert Frost from ‘The Wood-Pile,’ a pensive study on nature, old age, and loneliness

Handwritten partial poem by Robert Frost, penned on an off-white 5.75 x 2,75 sheet, which is signed below by Frost, who writes the final passage of his 1912 poem, The Wood-Pile. It reads: “I thought that only / Someone who lived in turning to fresh tasks / Could so forget his handiwork on which / He spent himself, the labor of his ax, / And leave it there far from a useful fireplace / To warm the frozen swamp as best it could / With the slow smokeless burning of decay.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 10.25 x 8.25. In fine condition, with scattered light foxing.

In February of 1912, Robert Frost wrote a poem called ‘The Wood-Pile,’ which he would single out for reprinting in his annual Christmas card nearly 50 years later, shortly before he died. The Wood-Pile’ was originally published in 1914 in North of Boston, which was Robert Frost’s second book of verse and the one that developed the author’s distinctive character—that of a New England country gentleman. It was written, according to Frost, in Derry, New Hampshire, where he lived as a farmer and schoolteacher before any of his poems were published. Like his other poems written during this period, ‘The Wood-Pile’ deals with nature, loneliness, and the human life cycle, particularly the process of aging. The poem implies a greater overall purpose in the world that cannot be directly explained, only felt.
