World War II-dated TLS in French, signed “C. de Gaulle,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, personal (4 Carlton Gardens) letterhead, January 21, 1941. Letter to Mrs. Alfred Sutro, in full (translated): “I have received the cheque for £25 that you sent me in your letter of 26 December. This is the fifth contribution that has reached me in your name and I want to tell you how much I appreciate this support and this trust coming from an Alsatian by birth and assured with such loyalty. I would like to point out to you that there is an Association in the United States responsible for collecting donations intended for the ‘Friends of the French Volunteers’ and to which it would, no doubt, be more convenient for you to address yourself: ‘France Forever,’ 8, West 40th Street, New York. Please accept, Madam, the homage of my respectful sentiments.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
France Forever was founded on June 29, 1940, as an association of French men and women living in the United States, as well as American friends of France, acting to preserve comradeship between these countries in the cause of freedom and democracy. Created to support General de Gaulle in the fight against the Nazi occupation, and Vichy France, the organization also aimed to represent de Gaulle in the United States and to acquire embassy status. By 1941, the France Forever association had forty-six sections.
