Beautiful sepia-tone 3.75 x 5.5 bust-length photo of the popular actress and singer, affixed to its original 6.25 x 9.5 paperstock mount, which is signed neatly in black ink, “Lillian Russell, La Cigale.” In fine condition. A production of the 1886 three-act opera comique La cigale et la fourmi (The Grasshopper and the Ant) was revived at the Lyric Theatre in London, on October 9, 1890, under the title La Cigale, in a version by F. C. Burnand and Gilbert à Beckett. The same adaptation was presented at the Casino Theatre in New York, on October 26, 1891, and starred Lillian Russell, who headed the cast in a revival there the following year.
