African-American musician and composer (1873–1958) who is known as the ‘Father of the Blues,’ and is remembered for songs like ‘Memphis Blues’ and ‘St. Louis Blues.’ TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, March 28, 1956. Letter to Miss Dorothy G. Ray, in part: "You must know that I am blind but turn off a lot of work every day and yet cannot see anything. For the past 18 months I have been unable to go to my office but I keep 1 or 2 secretaries busy at home and such letters as yours are giving me a new lease on life. I will be pleased to autograph my book and 4 copies of 'St. Louis Blues.' My autobiography 'Father of the Blues' sells for $5.00 and 'St. Louis Blues' sells for .60¢ a copy but I will make them to you for 10% off, so if you send us $6.66 we will send you the music and book, postage prepaid and we will be glad to know that you read my book." In fine condition.
