Description

Scarce, early "George Bush—Campaign Fund" check, 8 x 3, filled out in type and signed by Bush, "George H. W. Bush," payable to George Bush Special Account for $1000, September 24, 1963. In fine condition.

Bush made his entry into politics in the early 1960s, first running for the chairmanship of the Harris County Republican Party, winning election in February 1963. He then sought to win a seat in the United States Senate in 1964. Bolstered by superior fundraising, Bush won the Republican primary by defeating former gubernatorial nominee Jack Cox in a run-off election. However, he failed to unseat liberal Democrat Ralph W. Yarborough, losing the final election 56 percent to 44 percent.
