Description

Politician and lawyer from Maryland (1813–1883) who served in Lincoln's cabinet as postmaster general during the Civil War. Civil War–dated partly-printed DS, signed “M. Blair,” one page, 16.5 x 13, April 22, 1861. Postmaster General Blair commissions Francis H. Marean, having "taken the Oath of Office, as required by law," as "a Postmaster, authorized to execute the duties of that Office at Maine." Signed at the conclusion in ink by Postmaster General Montgomery Blair. In fine condition. A desirable document signed at the outset of the Civil War, dating to just ten days after the bombardment of Fort Sumter.
