President Grover Cleveland sends a letter to the Guangxu Emperor, celebrating the Treaty of Wangxia, the first formal diplomatic agreement between China and the United States

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, June 19, 1894. President Cleveland directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “the envelope containing my letter of congratulations addressed to His Majesty the Emperor of China.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Grover Cleveland. In fine condition. President Grover Cleveland likely sent a letter of congratulations to the Guangxu Emperor in June 1894 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Wangxia (1844), the first formal diplomatic agreement between China and the United States, which was signed during the Qing Dynasty under the Daoguang Emperor.
