Description

Prince Philip on the murder of Lord Mountbatten—"This whole ghastly business might have been easier to hear if it had been an accident or an ‘act of God'"

ALS signed “Philip,” one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.5, Windsor Castle letterhead, August 29 [1979]. Handwritten letter to Richard, in full: “Thank you very much for your kind letter. This whole ghastly business might have been easier to hear if it had been an accident or an ‘act of God,’ what makes it so bitter is that it was deliberately perpetrated by some people who probably consider themselves to be civilized human beings. One can only pray that this shock may help to jerk a little sanity back into these people.” In fine condition. This letter from Prince Philip was written in response to the assassination of Lord Mountbatten, who was killed by a bomb planted aboard his fishing boat in Mullaghmore, County Sligo, Ireland, by members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army.
