TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, October 19, 1951. Letter to the Hon. Edna F. Kelly, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, in full: "I appreciated most highly your good letter of the seventeenth and, of course, I am always happy to have your views on any subject. Things happen in the world which we have to meet just as you have to meet conditions in your own District. We try to meet them as best we can. Sometimes I am not right sure that we do meet them in the right way, but when decisions have to be made it never helps to hesitate. I appreciate most highly your viewpoint on the issues expressed in your letter." In fine condition, with a stain touching the letterhead. Accompanied by a photocopy of Kelly's letter to President Truman regarding foreign policy, asking him to "encourage the French guarantee of Dominion status to Viet Nam," recognizing the nation as "the last stronghold of anti-communism on the continent of Asia."
A Democrat from Brooklyn, Edna F. Kelly served in the House of Representatives for twenty years, making her mark in a variety of areas. As a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, she supported the creation of NATO and helped to create the United States Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. She can also be credited with promoting the first equal pay for equal work bill, which she introduced in 1951. It was a landmark effort, which established a new era in the fight for women's equality.
From the Collection of Paul K. Carr, former UACC President and Noted Expert.
