Description

British writer (1868–1952) best known for his 1917 novel South Wind and his travel books. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 9, October 25, 1930. Letter to Argus Books in Chicago, in part: "The sheets arrived two days ago, and I at once cabled you: 'Arbooks Chicago cannot sign sheets unless you cable fifty pounds for all royalties leaving Italy in six days.' Yesterday I received the enclosed from the Post Office, from which it appears that Chicago has cabled that 'Arbooks' is unknown there.

As I don't want to spend another 64 francs in cabling, and as I leave in 2-3 days, I beg to inform you that the sheets are deposited with Mr. G. Orioll, 6 Lungarno Cersini, Florence (cable address: Avoriolor, Florence). If you cable him that you want the sheets back, he will despatch them. If you cable him the money, I shall sign them on my return, on the 15 November, and forward them to you signed, without any delay. I can also let you have the desired photograph." In very good to fine condition, with light creasing, trimmed edges, and a short edge tear.
