Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “M. Van Buren,” one page, 10.5 x 14.75, July 10, 1840. Scallop-top ship's pass issued to “the Ship William Lee of Newport, Eseck Gifford master or commander…mounted with one gun, navigated with twenty four men, to Pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchand[ize] without any hinderance, seisure, or molestation." Signed at the conclusion by President Martin Van Buren and countersigned by Secretary of State John Forsyth. The lower left retains the original white seal. In fine condition, with some faint pink staining, and cancellation holes touching each signature. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Van Buren, which features his preprinted facsimile signature.
