Description

Margaret Mitchell writes to a World War II soldier: "All through the worst of the terrible fighting which led up to the German surrender, your father was a worried man"

TLS signed “Margaret Mitchell Marsh, (Mrs. John R Marsh),” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, June 21, 1945. Letter to Sergeant Quincy, in full: "Your father gave me the copy of the Mauldin cartoon you sent him. It was the one which appeared in the Stars and Stripes and showed Joe writing a letter to 'Dear, Dear Miss Mitchell.' Needless to say, I was pleased and proud to know that Mr. Mauldin would use me in a cartoon, but I was prouder still that an Atlanta boy sent it home.

I am in and out of the Tenth Street Post Office all the time and I have been knowing your father for a long time. Whenever I go in we talk of you. Perhaps soldiers do not realize it, but families of boys in the service seldom talk of anything else except the boys. All through the worst of the terrible fighting which led up to the German surrender, your father was a worried man, but he would not have admitted it for anything. I got pretty worried about you myself before it was over, which may seem strange to you when you do not know me. But, after all, I have heard about you since you were a small boy. The other day your father said that you had sent some porcelains and glass home. He's cooking up a scheme whereby I can get a look at them. They sound beautiful and you must have excellent taste." In very good to fine condition, with light creasing, and dampstaining to the bottom creating a blurry quality to the signature.
