Description

Doyle references "spirit photography" a month before his death

TLS signed “A. Conan Doyle,” one page, 8 x 10, June 11, 1930. Letter to Donald Rogers, in full: "In reply to your question, Hudson’s book only covers a small portion of the subject. The real explanation has to cover all our experiences from evidential messages on the one hand to materialisations and spirit photography on the other. This Hudson fails to do." In fine condition.

Doyle died of heart disease on July 7, 1930, only 26 days after signing this letter. The reference to “Hudson’s book” was likely a book written by Hudson Tuttle (1836–1910), a Spiritualist author, publisher, and lecturer from Ohio. For many of his later years, Arthur Conan Doyle intensely pursued his interest in paranormal phenomena, and by the end of World War I he identified himself as a Spiritualist, believing in a spirit world and the ability to communicate with those beyond the grave. He established the specialized Psychic Bookshop in 1925, devoted entirely to the sale of spiritualistic and psychic books; he later formed a small museum in the basement, showcasing various objects relevant to ghosts and the spirit world.
