Signed book: Ick's ABC. First edition. NY: Windmill Books, 1971. Hardcover with dust jacket, 10.25 x 8.25, 32 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in blue ballpoint, "To Sam & Betty—(you thought I was going to say more?!), Fred G.," sketching a heart below. In very good to fine condition, with light foxing and staining to the dust jacket, and a subtle band of toning over part of the signed page. Consignor notes that Gwynne signed the book for a friend, the noted equestrian artist Sam Savitt.
Though best known for his classic television roles—most notably as Herman Munster on The Munsters—Fred Gwynne wrote and illustrated children's books. In this unusual volume, Ick, a lovable ecological character, leads the reader through a 'cautionary tale of alphabet ecology'—'A' is for 'air pollution,' 'E' is for 'endangered species,' 'R' is for 'recycle,' and so on.
