Description

Civil War-dated handwritten endorsements by Union Brigadier Generals Abner Doubleday and John Gibbon, signed “A. Doubleday, Brig., Genl Vol. Comg Div. 1st A. C.” and “John Gibbon, Brig. Genl., Comdg Div., Hd. Qrs. 2d Div., Nov. 30, 1862,” penned on the reverse of a letter sent to New York Governor Edwin D. Morgan recommending promotions for Lieutenant Colonel Horace Thomas and Captain Edmund L. Lee, one page, both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, November 29, 1862. On the reverse below an affixed receipt is Doubleday’s partial approval: “…spoken or and have no doubt he would be an excellent appointment.” Gibbon’s lengthy recommendation to the right reads: “I take great pleasure in recommending in the strongest terms the within appointments to Gov. Morgan’s favorable consideration. Capt. Lee is now acting Insp. Gen. on my staff and I have every confidence that the promotion of Lt. Col. Thomas and himself will be of benefit to the service of the United States and the State of New York.” In fine condition, with partial separations to folds.
