The treaty is aimed at safeguarding submarine telegraph cables that traverse international waters by establishing rules and regulations to prevent damage to or interference with submarine telegraph cables. This includes protection against activities such as fishing, anchoring, and other potential hazards that could disrupt the functioning of these cables. Still in effect today, the convention has undergone amendments to address emerging challenges and technological advancements in the field of submarine cable communication.
