Description

President Arthur and the United States agree to terms with the "International Convention for the protection of submarine cable"

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, January 26, 1885. President Arthur directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to the exchange copy of the International Convention for the protection of submarine cable, concluded at Paris on the 14th day of March, 1884.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Chester A. Arthur. In fine condition.

The International Convention for the Protection of Submarine Telegraph Cables was concluded in Paris on March 14, 1884, ratified by the United States in 1885, and entered into force on May 1, 1888. The treaty is aimed at safeguarding submarine telegraph cables that traverse international waters by establishing rules and regulations to prevent damage to or interference with submarine telegraph cables. This includes protection against activities such as fishing, anchoring, and other potential hazards that could disrupt the functioning of these cables. Still in effect today, the convention has undergone amendments to address emerging challenges and technological advancements in the field of submarine cable communication.
