Description

Four months after annexation, President McKinley reserves "certain lots in the Hawaiian Island for naval purposes"

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, November 2, 1898. President McKinley directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to my proclamation reserving certain lots in the Hawaiian Island for naval purposes.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by William McKinley. In fine condition.

Roughly four months after the Newlands Resolution, which was passed on July 7, 1898, by the United States Congress to annex the independent Republic of Hawaii, President William McKinley signed Proclamation 427, ‘Reserving for Naval Purposes Certain Lands in Honolulu, Hawaii.’ Per the document, the certain reserved lots were as follows:

‘1st. The water front lying between the Bishop Estate and the line of Richards Street including the site of prospective wharves, slips, and their approaches.

2d. The blocks of land embracing lots No. 86 to 91, 100 to 131, including Mililani Street to the intersection of Halekauwali Street; and the Government water lots lying between the Bishop Estate and Punch-bowl and Allen Streets.’ An interesting document related to McKinley and the pivotal role he played in the annexation of Hawaii.
