Description

President Cleveland sends a "ceremonial letter" to Sanford B. Dole, "President of the Republic of Hawaii"

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, January 18, 1895. President Cleveland directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to my ceremonial letter addressed to His Excellency Sanford B. Dole, President of the Republic of Hawaii.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Grover Cleveland. In fine condition.

After the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii and its monarchy on January 17, 1893, Sanford Dole (1844-1926) was named president of the Provisional Government of Hawaii. He later served as the first and only elected president of the Republic of Hawaii from 1894 to 1898, when Hawaii officially became a U.S. territory.

An anti-imperialist, President Cleveland opposed the push to annex Hawaii, launched an investigation into the 1893 coup against the Hawaiian queen, Liliʻuokalani, and called for her to be restored. However, without the support of Congress, Cleveland's efforts to restore the monarchy were unsuccessful. Cleveland ceased his efforts to restore the queen and went on to recognize and maintain diplomatic relations with the new Republic of Hawaii under President Dole. Ultimately, Hawaii did not regain its sovereignty during Cleveland's presidency, and it wasn't until 1898 that the United States officially annexed Hawaii.
