Description

Pavlov writes to a scientific colleague: "I would like to talk to you about work and dogs"

Russian physiologist (1849-1936) best known for his investigation of conditioned reflex through the use of experiments involving salivating dogs. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1904. ALS in Cyrillic, signed “Yours, I. Pavlov,” one page, 6.75 x 7.25, no date but annotated "1930-1931" in another hand. Handwritten letter by Pavlov to a colleague, in part (translated): "Dear Mariya Kapitonovna, Thank you very much for your message…I'll take care of it. I would like to talk to you about work and dogs. Maybe you can come tomorrow and we'll clarify all for the real benefit of the cause." In very good to fine condition, with some offsetting to ink and a bit of blurring to the closing sentiment and signature.

Mariia Kapitonovna Petrova was a student and co-worker of Ivan Pavlov from 1910 to 1936, devoting her research to the physiology and pathology of higher nervous activity and the study of experimental neuroses caused by overstrain and by the interaction of excitation and inhibition in the cerebral cortex and the dependence of these processes on the animal’s type of nervous system. At the famed 'Pavlovian session' of 1950, she was praised as a follower of Pavlov's legacy. A supremely desirable letter by the celebrated experimental researcher to one of his devotees, referring to his most famous scientific test subjects: dogs.
