Description

"I have always loved Mr. Chips and am so happy to have this other book"

World War II-dated TLS as first lady, one page, 6 x 9.25, White House letterhead, May 10, 1941. Letter to novelist and screenwriter James Hilton, in full: “Thank you so much for giving me the companion volume of ‘Goodbye Mr. Chips.’ I have always loved Mr. Chips and am so happy to have this other book. Meeting you made Sunday a memorable day for me and I cannot tell you how happy I was to have had the opportunity.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original White House mailing envelope.

Hilton’s 1934 novella Goodbye, Mr. Chips, which focused on the life of school teacher Mr. Chipping, was famously made into a 1939 film of the same name.
