Composer (1887-1979) who studied at the Paris Conservatoire from 1897 to 1904, where she won several prizes. She went on to write many vocal and instrumental works, winning second prize at the Grand Prix de Rome in 1908 for her cantata, La Sirène (The Siren). After 1918 she devoted herself to teaching, first at home, and later at the Conservatoire and the Ecole Normale de Musique, where she had international influence. ANS from Nadia Boulanger, penned at the top of an 8 x 11.75 French-language regulations page issued by the International Olympic Committee for the ‘International Competition for an Olympic Hymn.” Boulanger’s handwritten note: “Dear Dan, Why not! The work ought to be beautiful if one believes in the purpose. Most affectionately, Nadia Boulanger.” The recipient, Boston composer and her former student Daniel Pinkham, signs below in blue felt tip. In very good to fine condition, with folds, and a small tear and wear to the left edge.
The Olympic Hymn, also known as the Olympic Anthem, is a choral cantata by opera composer Spyridon Samaras, with lyrics by Greek poet Kostis Palamas. Both poet and composer were the choice of the Greek Demetrius Vikelas, who was the first President of the International Olympic Committee. The anthem by Samaras and Palamas was declared the official Olympic Anthem by the International Olympic Committee in 1958 at the 54th Session of the IOC in Tokyo, Japan.
