Description

Britten thanks a journalist for their "enthusiastic" column on "the ‘Noye's Fludde’ recording"

Important British composer (1913-1976), widely regarded as the greatest since Purcell, whose works include the opera Peter Grimes, the War Requiem, and scores of choral works. TLS, one page, 8 x 10, The Red House (Aldeburgh) letterhead, February 10, 1962. Letter to a journalist, in full: “Thank you for your letter and for the nice things you say about the ‘Noye's Fludde’ recording in the Croydon Advertiser. I am very happy that you approve of it, and pleased that you should write such enthusiastic things in your column.” In fine condition.

Noye's Fludde is a one-act opera by the British composer Benjamin Britten, intended primarily for amateur performers, particularly children. First performed on June 18, 1958, at that year's Aldeburgh Festival, it is based on the 15th-century Chester 'mystery' or 'miracle' play that recounts the Old Testament story of Noah's Ark. Britten specified that the opera should be staged in churches or large halls, not in a theatre.
