Autograph endorsement signed, "I unite in this, B. Harrison," on the docket side of an 1884 New Mexico Territory petition, two pages, 8.5 x 13.75, stamped as received by the Department of the Interior on April 3, 1884. Headed, "To his Excellency, Hon. Chester A. Arthur, President of the United States," the petition recommends "the appointment of Gen. S. M. Strickler to the position of Surveyor General for the Territory of New Mexico." Besides Harrison, the document is signed by 36 leading citizens and officials of New Mexico Territory and a lengthy endorsement by U.S. Senator Preston B. Plumb (just above Harrison’s). Plumb and Samuel M. Strickler both served as Kansas legislators and Civil War officers (Strickler was General of Kansas militia and Plumb a Lt. Col. Of Kansas Cavalry). Among the New Mexico luminaries signing are Captain James Lawrence 'Santiago' Hubbell [a pioneer trader and U.S. Marshal], Charles A. Marriner [California miner, Chief Engineer for Arizona Canal, which made Phoenix AZ habitable], Jesse M. Wheelock [Architect who designed the first building on the Univ. of New Mexico campus], and William Burr Childers [Mayor of Albuquerque]. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling and multiple short edge tears.
