World War I-dated TLS, one page, 8.5 x 10.75, personal Kansas City Star letterhead, May 15, 1918. Letter to Edward A. Greene, in full: “I think you should give the name of any man responsible for such an infamous falsehood. Please show him this letter. Either he knows nothing of the case whatever, in which event he had no business to speak, or he knows that the Navy was more than doubled in size during my administration, and considerably more than quadrupled in efficiency. If he will turn to my special message of April 13th, 1908, or to the message of the preceding December, he will find the facts precisely set forth, or you can turn to my Autobiography. The Navy did not begin to go back until the Democrats gained control of the lower House in 1910, when they at once stopped appropriations for it. It was at its lowest point after the first two years of Mr. Wilson's term, during the preceding and immediately succeeding the outbreak of the great war. Let me repeat that your friend was stating what he must have known to be an untruth.” In his own hand, Roosevelt adds a few words to the text and also includes a postscript: “In my recently published Princeton Lectures, and in Charles Washburn’s book about me, the facts are fully set forth.” In very good to fine condition, with lightly trimmed edges, small repairs on the back, and toning from prior display. Desirable naval content from the president who famously sent the Navy's 'Great White Fleet' on a world tour to project America's power around the globe.
