Description

Nixon on Mark Twain: "He was a profound philosopher as well as a great story teller"

TLS signed “Dick,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, December 30, 1983. Letter to mutual fund pioneer Jack J. Dreyfus, in part: "I am again in your debt for helping me to rediscover Mark Twain and to understand that he was a profound philosopher as well as a great story teller. I admire your tenacity on Dilantin. As Elmer Bobst used to tell me, the medical profession is the most prejudiced and hidebound of all when it comes to new treatments they have not discovered." In very fine condition. Accompanied by an unrelated White House stationery envelope addressed to Dreyfus, and a carbon copy of a 1971 letter from Dreyfus to Nixon. Dreyfus, who is known for popularizing mutual funds through direct marketing to the public, was a vocal activist for the use of Dilantin, an anticonvulsant, as a treatment for several mental health disorders—a position to which Nixon refers in the present letter.
