Irishman (1840-1876) who fought in Italy during the 1860 Papal War before volunteering for the Union side in the Civil War. After the Civil War ended, Keogh received a permanent commission as Captain of Company I, 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment commanded by George Armstrong Custer during the Indian Wars. He was killed with Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Rare ink signature, "M. W. Keogh, Capt. of CI Cavalry,” on an off-white 3.25 x 2 sheet clipped from a military document. In fine condition.
At the end of the Civil War, Brevet Lt. Colonel Keogh chose to remain on active duty and accepted a Regular Army commission as a second lieutenant in the 4th Cavalry on May 4, 1866. On July 28, 1866, he was promoted to Captain and reassigned to the 7th Cavalry at Ft. Riley in Northeast Kansas where he took command of Company I. The 7th Cavalry Regiment was first commanded by Colonel Andrew Smith and subsequently by Colonel Samuel D. Sturgis. George Armstrong Custer was the regiment's Lieutenant Colonel and its deputy commander.
