British novelist (1898-1981) and the elder brother of the better-known Evelyn Waugh. Alec is perhaps best known for his controversial debut novel, The Loom of Youth, and for his 1955 novel Island in the Sun, which when adapted for film, secured from Hollywood the greatest amount ever paid for the use of a novel at that time. Rare ALS from Alec Waugh, one page, 5 x 8, Chapman & Hall Ltd. letterhead, July 7, 1922. Brief handwritten letter to Mr. Macleod, in full: "I venture to enclose the following article which may be, I hope suitable for 'The Daily Mail.'" In very good to fine condition, with light creasing and foxing in the margins. The first signed item from Waugh that we have ever offered.
