Description

American chemist (1887-1955) who discovered that enzymes can be crystallized, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1946 with John Howard Northrop and Wendell Meredith Stanley. He was also the first to prove that enzymes are proteins. Vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of Sumner standing outdoors in a handsome three-quarter-length pose, signed in the lower border in fountain pen, "James Batcheller Sumner." Notation on reverse dates the photo to Christmas 1945 in Ithaca, New York. In fine condition. The first signed photo of Sumner we have ever offered.
