American singer, songwriter, and pianist (1927-1990) who was highly popular for most of the 1950s. He has been cited by critics as a major precursor to what became rock and roll, for his jazz and blues-influenced music, and his animated stage personality. Tony Bennett called Ray the ‘father of rock and roll,’ and historians have noted him as a pioneering figure in the development of the genre. Vintage glossy 8 x 10 Columbia Records publicity photo of Johnnie Ray by the Maurice Seymour Studio of New York, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To my pal, Brian—Johnnie Ray.” In very good to fine condition, with light scattered creasing, mostly to borders, the top of which bears a very short tear.
