Description

AQS on an off-white 6 x 3.25 sheet, signed at the conclusion in ink, "Henry W. Longfellow, April 1855." Longfellow pens the first stanza from his poem 'Excelsior,' in full: "The shades of night were falling fast, / As through an Alpine village passed / A youth, who bore 'mid snow and ice, / A banner with the strange device, / Excelsior!" Attractively matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 15.75 x 9.75. In fine condition, with some faint staining.
