Description

British-born American politician and lawyer (1811-1884) who, after serving in the US Senate and rejecting nomination to the Supreme Court, served variously as attorney general, secretary of war, and secretary of state for the Confederacy. ADS signed "Benjamin, atty," one page both sides, 8 x 13, April 24, 1835. A handwritten petition in the lawsuit between Joseph White and John P. Phillips, in part: "Petitioner further shews that he verily believes that said John P. Phillips is about to remove from this state without leaving in it sufficient property to satisfy the aforesaid demand—wherefore he prays that the said John P. Phillips be arrested and held to bail, that he be cited to appear and answer the petition and that judgment be rendered against him in favor of this petitioner for said sum of One hundred and thirty-six dollars and eighteen cents." In fine condition, with light toning along the folds, and some minor edge chipping.
