United States Army officer (1825-1910) who served as Chief of the War Department Telegraph Staff from 1862 to 1866, United States Assistant Secretary of War from 1866 to 1867, and later became an executive at Western Union. Signed book: Lincoln in the Telegraph Office by David Homer Bates. First edition. NY: The Century Co., 1907. Hardcover, 5.75 x 8.5, 432 pages. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page in dark ink, "Mr. Lewis Steenrod Thompson, Brookdale, New Jersey, With compliments of Thomas Thompson Eckert." Autographic condition: condition. Book condition: VG-/None, with a cracked front hinge, edgewear, rubbing, and bumped corners.
