Description

Wright to the Met’s lead baritone, seeking musical counsel for his daughter, "She is a Debussy fan"

TLS signed twice as “Frank" and "F. LL. W.,” one page, 11 x 8.5, Taliesin letterhead, January 22 (1942). Letter to actor and opera singer Lawrence Tibbett, who was the lead baritone with the New York Metropolitan Opera from 1923 to 1950. In part: “I am so glad to see you coming back and up. Makes me feel better myself—for some reason. You and Jane might like to know that my youngest and very dear daughter Iovanna (age seventeen) has been studying the harp with Grandjenny and lives with Madame Germaine Mariani at 45 East 66th for several months. I would like to have her talk music with you and perhaps you and Jane would find her as charming as we all think she is. She is going about just a little, her allowance is small, to musical events—opera occasionally—she is a Debussy fan and wants to see Peleas and Melisande of course. She is selfpossessed but shy too and wouldn’t dream of calling you up even if I asked her to do so. Will you, or Jane perhaps call her up some time and arrange to see her? And maybe hear her play! She plays well…Lloyd stopped on the way West and we talked about you, as usual. Olgivanna and I expect to be in your Godless city for a few days in a fortnight or so.” Another hand has added at the top, “Tickets for opera?” In fine condition, with scattered light foxing.
