Woodbury approves a claim for "certain goods destroyed by fire at the late conflagration in the city of New York"

American attorney, jurist, and Democratic politician (1789-1851) who served as Secretary of the Navy under President Jackson, Secretary of the Treasury under Jackson and Van Buren, and as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1845 until his death. LS signed “Levi Woodbury,” one page, 8 x 10, June 26, 1840. Treasury Department circular letter, in part: "In compliance with the directions contained in the 4th section of the act of Congress of the 7th of July, 1838, entitled 'An act to remit the duties upon certain goods destroyed by fire at the late conflagration in the city of New York,' I have duly examined the testimony, and have compared the same with the statement and adjudication of the Commissioners in the claim of George McBride Jr. and approve of their determination in regard to said claim, and hereby sanction the award of $22.77." In fine condition.
