Associate Justice McLean receives 21 volumes of state papers from Senator Crittenden

LS signed “J. J. Crittenden” and "John McLean for Jacob Burnet," one page both sides, 3.75 x 6.25, January 19, 1838. Letter sent to McLean by Crittenden, notifying him of receipt of "one complete set consisting of the following volumes of state papers printed by Messrs. Gales & Seaton," including volumes on Foreign Relations, Indian Affairs, Finance, Commerce, Military Affairs, Naval Affairs, Post Office, Public Lands, Claims, and miscellaneous subjects. McLean signs on the reverse, confirming receipt of the books and forwarding them to former senator Jacob Burnet of Ohio. In very good to fine condition, with creasing along one edge and minor paper loss to the other.

Crittenden was a Southern politician (1787-1863) who served as governor of Kentucky, a senator from Kentucky, and as attorney general under Presidents Harrison, Tyler, and Fillmore. McLean was a jurist and politician (1785-1865) who served in the United States Congress, as U.S. Postmaster General, and as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
