Description

Abolitionist (1810-1898) and supporter of the Underground Railroad, whose own house acted as a station. Office of the Commissioners of the Freedman's Savings and Trust Company check, 8 x 3.25, filled out in another hand and signed by Purvis, "Rob't Purvis," payable to Alexander Lewis for $1.32, November 1, 1875. Matted and framed with a biographical sheet to an overall size of 13.5 x 20. In fine condition, with two cancellation holes, one of which affects the start of the signature.
