Soldier and businessman (1831-1916) who was a pioneering figure in military intelligence during the Civil War, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's intelligence chief in the Western Theater. In postwar years he was a railroad executive who helped direct the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Partly-printed DS, signed “G. M. Dodge,” one page, 10.75 x 7.75, March 17, 1890. Stock certificate for 322 shares in the Denver, Texas and Fort Worth Railroad Company issued to The Mercantile Trust Co., signed in ink by Dodge as president and countersigned by the company's secretary. In fine condition.
